Rebuilding Futures in Kibera Kenya, Emergency Relief for Single Mothers

In the heart of Kibera one of Africa’s largest informal settlements daily life is a battle for survival. Over 250,000 people live packed in tiny tin-roofed structures, without consistent access to clean water, healthcare, or safety nets. For the women of Kibera, especially single mothers, each day is a negotiation between feeding their children and affording rent, between dignity and despair.

When torrential rains hit Nairobi in March, Kibera was one of the hardest-hit areas. Flash floods swept through the slum, submerging homes, destroying food stores, and displacing hundreds overnight. And for women like Amina, a 29-year-old single mother of three, the floods didn’t just take her bed or cooking pots they took her sense of security.

“I was left standing in water, holding my baby, not knowing where to go,” Amina says. “I couldn’t afford a bus fare, and even if I could — where would I go?”
